Breast reduction

Breast reduction, often referred to as reduction mammaplasty, is a technique to remove extra breast skin, glandular tissue, and fat in order to obtain breasts that are more in proportion to your body and to relieve the discomfort that comes with having breasts that are too big (macromastia).

Things to Pay Attention to Pre-Surgery

A breast exam is required prior to the procedure. In order to make the best choice, the breasts may be evaluated using mammography and ultrasound in circumstances that seem risky or for patients over the age of 40.

Age Range

There is no age requirement for a breast reduction except that under 18 years you do need your parents consent and need your breasts to be fully developed.

Surgical Methods

There are several available methods. The majority of these methods maintain the chute pathways to ensure that nursing is not affected after delivery. About 70% of women have reported being able to breastfeed after giving delivery.

Although there are numerous procedures for doing the surgery, practically all of them entail making an incision that runs from the top of the breast to the bottom in a straight or reverse T shape. The surgeon decides the procedure to be employed after considering the size, degree of distortion, and elasticity of the breast(s) during the examination.

Type of Anaesthesia and Length of Procedure

Under general anesthesia, breast reduction surgery typically takes three hours. To eliminate any potential blood and fluid clots, a tiny drain is placed into each breast and left there for one to two days. The patient gets dismissed from the hospital the next day after the procedure. After a few days, the patient can resume their regular daily activities and employment.

Recovery Period

After the surgery, the plan is to miss at least a week of work or school. Some patients require a few weeks, but every case is unique. Your surgeon will give you instructions on when to return for bandage and stitch removal visits.

You should expect fatigue and breast soreness following the procedure. Your surgeon will prescribe you an oral pain reliever to help you get through the first few days. Avoid doing any hard lifting as well.

Things to Pay Attention to Post-Surgery

  • For a few weeks, you need to reduce your workout.
  • For three to four weeks, avoid pushing or carrying large things.
  • After a breast reduction procedure, the breasts cannot re-grow. Breast cancer risk is reduced for women who get this treatment.
  • The chute pathways have been safeguarded so that future nursing can take place.
  • Wear the sports bra that your doctor has prescribed frequently.
  • Scabbing or minor fluid leaks from the procedure site are both possible.
  • Due to the possibility of the incisions swelling from sexual stimulation, you might be unable to engage in sexual activity for a week. For six weeks, only gentle touching should be allowed on the breasts.
